Sweet Valentine Sachets

I simply adore Valentines Day. A holiday for cake and champagne, handmade valentines, candy coated girls (or date) nights-in and sweet pastel spring bouquets, how could one possibly not fall head over heels in love with the charm and loveliness of it all?

The modern Valentine’s Day leaves so much to be desired. Since the 14th and 15th centuries when the holiday celebrated courtly love with song and poetry competitions and symbolisms of early spring lovebirds, Valentine’s day has had quite the romantic downfall. Now, the shell of a once sweetly amorous holiday, is unimaginative and full of clichés programmed into us by jewelry adds and purchase-able ‘romance’ standards. Valentine’s Day has become a day for prix fixe menus and overly crowded restaurants with last minute, desperate reservations and a heavy scent of disappointment in the air. Quelle horreur!

But, if you put aside the consumerism of it all, the boring, predicatable presentation of small square velvet boxes and drugstore red roses, you have something simple and pure, all tied up with a velvet bow and tucked sweetly into a heart shaped chocolate box. This year, step away from the current social norms and embrace Valentine’s Day for all that it is meant to be… a thoughtful and charming celebration of love.

Take a walk on the creative side and do as Shakespeare would do, or that of the Victorians, and be an artiste de l'amour! Create your own little sweet valentines with hearts and bows and little forget-me-nots. Write a poem for your lover. Give the gift of a homemade treat. Or make little wax and tissue paper sachets filled with festive petit treats.

Have fun with love! Homemade valentines are small but mighty - for remember, it is always the collection of little things that add up to the biggest thing of all. Amour. Xx
