October 2026 Vol. Nº35
There is a twinge of magic in the air, nights have shifted into cozy scenes of dripping candles and delightful treats where chilly evenings invite us to brew up a collection of comfort foods and serve them alongside a twist of nostalgia – Memories from childhood Halloweens, the thrill of dumping candy out onto the living room floor after the adventure of trick-or-treating, a steaming bowl of mom’s homemade chili piled high with sour cream and cheese waiting to warm icy finger tips and the familiar flash of the family’s point and shoot camera used to capture just out of focus moments. This is the scene of Halloween that I love the most. A season that every year tugs on my heartstrings as I long for falling leaves over graveyard scenes in the front yard and colored lightbulbs snuck into tableside lamps. This is the season of mischief and wonder. A season where tales of frights and things that go bump in the night ignite imagination and intrigue, inviting us to stare into the night’s shadows just a little bit longer in hopes of witnessing something spine-chilling… something story worthy.

Spooky Stays Worth Obsessing Over
A mini feature designed to raise a bit of that spooky season spirit — Haunted hotels dripping in history, opulence and tales that would make your hair stand on end.
A stunning 1920’s hotel in downtown Los Angeles with a reputation to see and be seen. Playing host to the Oscars for many years in the 1930s and serving as a speakeasy and gangster hangout for the likes of Al Capone, the hotel is the epitome of Hollywood lore. With ties to the horrible and infamous case of the Black Dahlia and tales of paranormal activity and countless sightings of spirits wandering the halls. The Biltmore is a hotel that is said to be haunted from the depths of the basement to the skyline rooftop views.
Located in a historical building in Florence Italy, the hotel, established in 1936, has the power to make its guests feel as though they are stepping back in history and into a world of opulence. Featuring stunning accommodation adorned with hand painted frescos on the ceilings and stunning antique furniture, the interior design is far from the only extravagance you are about to enjoy. Even more impressive than the decor are the tales of eerie hauntings and the presence of ghostly figures. With stories of guests feeling cold breath on their face in the late hours of the night, the spine-tingling sensation of being watched, apparitions of a man rumored to be Mussolini, a child skipping down corridors, a woman knitting in the corner and a maid who never seemed to finish her chores, this hotel is sure to give you the fright of your life.
Known best for a nightmare that occurred in room 217 that sparked the inspiration for Stephen King’s terrifying and legendary film, The Shining, this hotel is a celebrity on its own. (Later the room is said to have been rented out by Jim Carey who fled it in the middle of the night.) The room’s infamy goes well beyond The Shining, the location was the sight of a gas explosion in 1911 where chambermaid Elizabeth miraculously survived and continued working until 1950. Today it is said that the ghost of Elizabeth still goes about her tidying tasks by making occupied beds, folding clothes and arranging suitcases while guests are sleeping — Though please note, it's not suggested to stay there as a couple unless you're married. With tales beyond 217, including the original owners haunting the bar and music room with phantom piano playing, ghostly bartenders at work and the entire 4th floor playing host to frolicking children this hotel is not for the faint of heart.
A chic and ghoulish libation for your Halloween soirée.

101: How to Build a Haunting Tablescape for an Elevated Halloween Soirée
An interview with Halloween Hostess, Camille Collard, where she divulges a bit of insight into her haunting creative process, even revealing where she sources her most prized antique silver pieces and iconic 1980’s martini glasses.
You tend to lean into themes and storytelling with your dinner parties. When you began dreaming up this Halloween evening, what was the foundation of your inspiration?
I wanted this Halloween dinner party to be weird. The weirder the better. Initially inspired by the dinner party scene from Beetlejuice, the one where they are dancing around the table and then the shrimp cocktail grabs their faces… I wanted it to feel as though that dinner party could be happening in your own dining room. After mulling over the visuals and how to apply them to a menu, I eventually landed on a combination of what I imagined Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara) would have served to her dinner party guests paired with elements that felt purely nightmarish. Shrimp cocktail poke bowls with a snake influence, eyeball martinis, platters of flesh toned nigiri and personalized headstones for desserts — A delightfully unsettling menu! A perfect creation of chic and creepy, exactly what I had been dreaming of!
When designing the tablescape for a dinner party, what do you focus on first?
The art of setting the table begins with setting the tone of an evening. What should the color story be, what am I serving for dinner and how will it be plated? This is all shaped by a bit of imagination and a concept of how I want my guests and audience to feel. Everything on the table should play into my tale du jour, this is where I begin… The story. Oftentimes, I am simply trying to capture a feeling or bring to life a world that feels like an escape. From there, the design is always built around a visual representation of my interpretation. Designing a night around a suspension of disbelief involves visual elements and the actual dinner menu to work seamlessly, it all needs to compliment each other even if it is a balancing act of the unexpected. This is the theatre of dining, the beauty of telling a story and building a world for the evening to exist within. For this seasonal dinner, the goal was to transport my guests into a scene of Halloween haunts, allowing them to exist within a world that was built for one night only. An evening where elegance and class is balanced perfectly with the weird and creepy – A dinner party night-dream.
Where do you source all of your stunning tablewares for your soirées?
With a preference for unique pieces (the older the better) my favorite sources continue to be flea markets, estate sales, auction sites, Facebook marketplace and Etsy… the key is to have an open mind, be able to see beyond the tarnish and be willing to commit to the rabbit hole. Collecting in this manner is not only the best way to find dream pieces that that I can actually afford, but most importantly, allows me to have an array of styles and time periods all on the table at once, as most of what I own does not exactly ‘match’. Rather than an actual set of things, antique silver tends to function as a throughline for 80% of my dinner and cocktail parties bringing together a variety of styles and patterns, acting as a sort of neutral for my Le Supper Club endeavours.
For this year’s Halloween dinner party, I leaned into chic black accents (moody wine glasses, modern 80’s dishes and sleek black stem martini glasses) all set on a silvery blue tablecloth and paired that with silver candle sticks and silver serving dishes help to create a scene that was not too matchy-matchy. The bulk of what I used for the evening already existed within my collection or had been on my wish list for ages, adding in new pieces only if I saw a need for them again in the future. Today, my collection is quite vast, and forever growing, however it didn't start that way, it has been a decade in the making. When sourcing and planning I do my best to imagine how each piece will add to my overall aesthetic, I need my collection to be full of variety and versatility, and yet it also needs to play into my style and sense of storytelling. The silver pieces from 1910 need to also work with 1980’s martini glasses. Platters need to perfectly play into a summertime picnic in the garden while also having a place on my Halloween table. It is all a little tedious but I adore the process, falling in love with new (old) pieces that I simply cannot walk away from is all of the fun. Discovering dishes that carry an unknown story, a story that I am honored and privileged to add to is the ‘why’ behind my compulsion to collect. This is why I have to have so much storage (and silver polish)!
