A tomato may be a fruit, but it is a singular fruit. A savory fruit. A fruit that has ambitions far beyond the ambitions of other fruits.

Amalfi Coast Dinner

Dinner parties, for me, are all about transporting oneself from the basic and the mundane to something extraordinary and enchanting. From the setting to the cocktails, every detail comes together to create a magical moment to be shared by loved ones around the table. It is a bit of armchair travel but around the dining table. And I live for it.

For this month's soirée, I opted to transport myself and my guests to an evening on the Amalfi Coast. If I close my eyes and imagine the Italian version of a dream summer holiday, this dinner hits all of the right spots. Bright and airy with plenty of Mediterranean allure. All ingredients prepared simply to show off their natural and wondrous flavors. Nothing too fussy on the table, just some incredible seasonal ingredients, wonderful conversation and a giant bowl of pasta.

An escape to the Amalfi Coast. Estate dell'amore!

Basil Ice Cream with Blueberry Swirl

Is there anything better than an ice cream treat at golden hour? I think not. As we enjoy the longest days of the year and the light lingers in a cotton candy state a little bit longer, it is simply the best time to indulge in a summertime staple — Ice cream sandwiches. Far from the versions you grew up with, this homemade ice cream takes the art of frozen dessert to the next level. With a subtle basil infusion to the silky ice cream base and the jewel toned swirls of a blueberry compote, this ice cream is about to rock your world. I truly think that basil ice cream is my absolute favorite. A unique take on a classic vanilla vibe, this ice cream is delicately sweet and so perfectly creamy, I could just melt along with it in the sun.

Who needs vanilla when you can have basil?

A Festive Summertime Fête

I woke up a couple of weeks ago and decided that the July edition was going to need a little more pizzazz, so I called up my friend, neighbor and chef extraordinaire, Amber, and talked her into a collaboration for a festive little dinner party for a much needed summer holiday aesthetic.

After bouncing some ideas around we landed on the idea of a crabdog. Sure you could call it a crab roll, but what fun is that? The recipe is simple, the favors are popping and it is so darn good. We paired the crab creation with a fresh take on fries, seasoning them with the magic of gremolata. So bright and zesty, the perfect duo for a summery feast! Plus these savory elements would all work wonderfully with my obsession to do a TomatoTini, a hot weather worthy cocktail featuring one of the absolute best summertime ingredients around… tomatoes. And it was absolutely *chefs kiss* perfection.

Recipes and inspo for your summertime hosting…

S’more Nostalgia

I was lucky. I grew up in the emerald greens and sapphire blues of SouthWest Washington. A place full of towering trees, endless pockets of lakes, rivers and waterfalls, and rambling blackberries that demanded picking. For me, summer was all about mini adventures and as much water as possible. We might not have done the big family trips with souvenirs to show off when school began in the fall, but we did have a local athletic club equipped with a high dive, a massive water slide and a junk food snack stand stocked with nachos and hot dogs and artificially dyed snow cones. It was truly a childhood paradise. These long days of summer are cemented in my mind as some of the most happy and carefree moments of my life. It all seemed so simple. Dial-up internet was nouveau tech and disposable cameras were tucked in backpacks ready to snap a photo that would maybe, one day be developed, exposing blurry memories of the ‘best summer ever!’ I long for the joy of sticky fingers, otter pop dyed tongues and awkward tan lines from the 90’s one piece that stylishly sported huge cut outs on each side, because I was not yet allowed to wear a bikini.

Ah, summer – that long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days, free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It’s a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, conquer trees, explore nooks and crannies, and make new friends.

TomatoTini the perfect summer cocktail.

Clarified TomatoTini

By Moi

  • 6 oz tomato juice from about 5 medium/small tomatoes

  • 1 1/2 oz simple syrup (I made mine using 1:1 ratio of water and avocado honey)

  • A few cracks of fresh black pepper

  • Pinch of kosher or sea salt

  • 3 oz lemon juice

  • 15 oz gin

  • 6 oz whole milk (this cannot be substituted)

Purée your fresh tomatoes and strain the juice through a fine sieve. Pour 6 oz of tomato juice into a large mason jar, add the simple syrup, salt, pepper, lemon juice and gin. Give the mixture a nice mix and add in the whole milk, gently stirring. Cover and place in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Using a fine sieve lined with a paper towel or coffee filter, allow the mixture to strain through the fine filter. This will remove any of the milk solids, leaving you with a beautiful, savory and smooth batch cocktail.

Shake or stir over ice until well chilled, pour into a martini glass, drizzle a bit of olive oil on top and serve with garnish of cherry tomato and mozzarella pearl. Cheers!
